In the upcoming phase of the project, we are excited about our aquaculture endeavours. Our primary focus will be to set up operations an aquafarm in the Saldanha Bay area, focusing on cultivating various seaweed species.

Additionally, as part of this initiative, we will be actively exploring potential locations for land-based aquaculture developments along the West Coast. Our aim is to support the cultivation of highly nutritious Ulva (sea lettuce) and Gracilaria (agar) in these areas.

With these endeavours, we are committed to embracing sustainable practices and contributing to the growth and development of the aquaculture industry. Stay tuned for more updates on our exciting journey!

Exploring Aquaculture in South Africa

Saldanha Bay is a hub of aquaculture developments. Extensive research has paved the way for the emergence of a promising industry: kelp farming. This pioneering initiative promises to revolutionise the aquaculture sector.

Leveraging an innovative and sustainable approach, we aim to employ the principles of IMTA (Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture) to strategically integrate kelp and seaweed cultivation with an existing mussel farm. This dynamic coexistence ensures optimal resource utilisation and minimal environmental impact.

We will also be exploring incorporating other seaweed species on the aquafarm, including Gracilaria which is sought-after for agar extraction. Globally the demand for seaweed is growing rapidly and focusing on expanding aquaculture activities will ensure that we can keep up with this industry expansion.
